the year is 2024. I am watching The X Files 1x08 with my blissfully offline boyfriend. We reach the scene where, in confinement, Mulder and Scully examine each other’s backs for alien marks. My boyfriend, who has never seen the show before, makes an amused noise and utters a strong contender for understatement of the year:
the coolest people are actually weird and fucked up and strange and peculiar and they just dont care. the coolest people are actually lame as hell and they rock it. this is what ive learned
it’s so weird to me how there’s cliques and hierarchies within fandom spaces these days like. we’re all just fucking nerds. how are you gonna try to be popular amongst the nerds. how are you going to feel superior over your fellow nerds. at the end of the day you’re still a fucking nerd bestie
this is what everyone has been saying!! no one is looking at celebrities for political statements, but they should and must use their platform to amplify the voices of those who need and most importantly be against this genocide!!
Just to add a bit more context: the fundraiser Ariana shared was started by Nicola Coughlan. This is the second or third fundraiser Nicola has had since October and those only ended up getting about $10 - 25k, not that that isn’t a huge amount of money. This fundraiser, however, is almost at $685k since I last checked, when I looked the other day (May 27th) it was sitting at around $23k. Nicola has only recently reached 4 million followers on IG, when she had fewer followers the fundraiser was able to reach a pretty humble amount of funds collected. When Ariana, with 379 million followers, shared this fundraiser, donations grew exponentially, about 2700% (my math may be a little off but you get the picture). Do you see what happens when people with large platforms and followings speak up? Mind you, sharing a link to a fundraiser is the bare bare bare minimum, but it is still something.
